Conviction Integrity Unit

The mission of the Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) is to ensure that justice is served by determining that all forensic evidence utilized by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office (WCPO) was and is accurate and reliable. The CIU is part of the Special Investigations Division of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

In December 2008 Prosecutor Worthy created the Forensic Evidence Review Unit (now named the Conviction Integrity Unit). The Unit was originally formed to address issues related to the closure of the Detroit Police Crime Lab. The CIU currently handles those issues, the facilitation of the Michigan State Police (MSP) forensic testing in new Detroit Police Department (DPD) cases, the audit of sexual assault kits recovered in DPD property and certain issues regarding the State Appellate Defender’s Office and the Innocence Project.

Notable Cases:
  • PEOPLE V.ORANDE THOMPSON (WCPO agreed to re-test and re-trial-case-defendant convicted at re-trial)
  • PEOPLE V. EDWARD HILL (WCPO agreed to re-test and re-trial-defendant convicted at re-trial)
  • PEOPLE V. JARRHOD WILLIAMS (WCPO agreed to re-test and to allow defendant to withdraw his plea-defendant convicted at trial)
