Inkster receives "elderly-friendly" designationThe city of Inkster received an "elderly-friendly" designation from the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging.
The program – Community for a Lifetime -- provides recognition to communities that
complete a community assessment for livability and implement improvements recommended by a livable community assessment. Wayne County’s Department of Health and Human Services completed the application on behalf of Inkster.
Two executive staff changes announced in Wayne CountySue Hamilton-Smith, director of the Department of Children and Family Services (CFS), has joined the executive staff of Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano as director of Program Education and Advocacy and Tadarial Sturdivant has been promoted to CFS director, Ficano announced Monday.
Sturdivant, who has served as deputy director of CFS since 2006, will oversee a department of about 250 employees. It is a leader in juvenile justice reform and community-based programs for at-risk and adjudicated juveniles and adult offenders.
Two veteran Wayne County attorneys have been promoted to head the county’s legal department, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano announced Thursday.
Wayne County — Wayne County will offer free training and testing for Wayne County residents interested in working for the U.S. Census Bureau, Executive Robert Ficano announced today. All training and testing for the paid positions is open to the public.

Wayne County launches H1N1 Vaccine on Wheels project in Southgate - Young children, Head Start program targetedWayne County - The launch of the H1N1 Vaccine on Wheels project at Aquinas School in Southgate by the Wayne County Department of Health and Human Services. To make the H1N1 flu vaccine more easily available to targeted populations such as children 3 to 4 years of age, Wayne County will administer the vaccine at various Wayne County Head Start locations. For the kick off, the county will use its Homeland Security Command Post, a 40-foot-long vehicle equipped with the latest technology, to help administer the vaccine. To date, Wayne County has provided about 150,000 doses of the vaccine for the H1N1 virus through its clinics and providers. Last weekend, more than 6,000 doses were administered at clinics in Livonia and Hamtramck.

Redford Township Board of Trustees approved PA198 Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption application made by Mercedes-Benz Hybrid LLC (MBH)Redford — Today, the Redford Township Board of Trustees approved an application made by Mercedes-Benz Hybrid LLC (MBH) for a PA198 Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption associated with a potential investment at its Detroit Diesel campus. MBH is a subsidiary of Daimler AG and will develop and maintain a line of conventional and alternative propulsion powertrain systems in a new, permanent research and development facility in Redford Township. The application was approved to support the final investment decision being made by the company.

The Dangers of Fireworks: A fireworks safety demonstrationRedford Township - Leave the fireworks show to the professionals – that is the important message from Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano who is deeply concerned about the upward trend in firework injuries. In 2007, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 9,800 people for fireworks related injuries; 56% of 2007 emergency room fireworks-related injuries were to the extremities and 36% were to the head. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will demonstrate the dangers of illegal fireworks to more than 100 children from the Oakgrove AME Church Summer Youth Academy from Detroit.

Wayne County announces grant to grow new logistics companiesDETROIT — Wayne County Chief Executive Robert Ficano announced a grant of $500,000 today to support the rapid establishment of at least 25 new logistics companies.
He made the announcement during welcoming remarks at "FastTrac to the Future," an event for potential entrepreneurs held today, Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Wayne State University’s Community Arts Center. "At least 25 individuals in this audience could be on a fast track to a new career within 30 days," said Ficano.

Medical Examiner released the body of Nevaeh BuchananWayne County – According to the Wayne County Medical Examiner Carl Schmidt M.D., the body of Neveah Buchanan has been released to a funeral home. The five-year-old girl has been positively identified as Neveah Buchanan. However, the cause of death is pending. Tissue samples were sent for special testing. The results may remain pending as the investigation continues. Inquiries about the investigation should be directed to the Monroe County Sheriff.

Wayne County Anticipates Fitch Ratings on the CountyWayne County — In the week General Motors Corp. filed for bankruptcy, Wayne County officials said they anticipate that Fitch Ratings will downgrade the county’s financial rating to BBB+ with a negative outlook.

Judge sides with Executive Ficano and orders cutbacks at jailsAcknowledging the dire economic times, Wayne Circuit Judge Michael Sapala ordered reductions in inmate population and staffing levels in the county jail system Thursday.The judge ordered a reduction of 512 beds and 84 staff positions, a decision that could eventually save the county about $6 million a year. The reductions will occur at two jails in downtown Detroit and the Dickerson Detention Facility in Hamtramck. About 28 sheriff’s deputies will be laid off.

Wayne County helps retain 2,000 auto jobsWayne County With the help of Wayne County, Ford Motor Co. will convert its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne from manufacturing Expeditions and Navigator to a smaller, more fuel efficient Focus. The change will retain at least 2,000 jobs, including skilled trades, production workers and salaried positions. The number of jobs could exceed 4,000, depending on market conditions.

Wayne County students win college scholarships from Ficano’s Vision FundThis year, 64 students out of 255 applicants in Wayne County will be awarded $500 college scholarships from the Wayne County Vision Fund, a non-profit organization started by Executive Robert Ficano. The amount totals $32,000. The fund has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to date. Applicants were required to have at least a 3.0 grade-point average, submit an essay and include recommendations from a principal or counselor.
