Workforce development is a critical component of economic diversification and the growth of the new economy industries. Wayne County works with several organizations that specialize in job placement and workforce development. Whether you are a prospective employer or a worker looking for resources to find a job or make a career change, Wayne County can help you identify programs and services to help you find success. Workforce Programs & Initiatives

Michigan Works! Association
The mission of the Michigan Works! Association is to provide leadership and services, and promote quality and excellence for the advancement of Michigan’s Workforce Development System and its customers and professionals.

Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA)
SEMCA oversees seven Michigan Works! service centers throughout Wayne and Monroe counties.Businesses can access the Michigan Talent Bank, Interview facilities, Rapid Response assistance and the Incumbent Worker Program (companies must meet eligibility requirements).

Detroit Workforce Development Department
The Mission of the Workforce Development Department, a Michigan Works! Agency is to promote the economic self-sufficiency of Detroit residents and to provide qualified workers to local employers through the delivery of cost-effective, high quality employment, training, and education services in partnership with businesses, community-based organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies.

Michigan Regional Skills Alliances (MiRSA)
MiRSAs are business-driven, business-focused partnerships that address workforce issues in a specific region and industry sector. The primary goals of the initiative are to provide Michigan businesses with a highly skilled workforce and connect Michigan citizens to good jobs with opportunities for career advancement.

No Worker Left Behind (NWLB)
No Worker Left Behind is accelerating the transition of thousands of workers into good-paying jobs by providing up to two years worth of free tuition at any community college, university, or other approved training provider to gain the skills and credentials for new careers in high-demand occupations, emerging industries, or to start a business.

Michigan Green Jobs Initiative
Employers that are looking to expand into the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency industry will need a highly skilled and professional workforce that is trained in a number of different research, design, and occupational programs. The No Worker Left Behind program has identified training programs that can be searched by county or region.

Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED)
A 2nd generation WIRED initiative, the Southeastern Michigan Innovation Alliance (SEMIA), composed of 9 counties including Detroit, targets four high growth clusters: advanced manufacturing, life sciences, homeland security and alternative energies.

Adult Education & Skill Development

Return to Learn at Schoolcraft College
Adults who seek to transition into new careers are invited to “Return to Learn” at Schoolcraft College.The Career and Transfer Center offers databases and other resources to help adultsexplore your career options. The Transitions Center provides the atmosphere and support for exploring educational, financial, professional and personal plans.

Focus Hope
Through the Centers of Opportunity programs, Machinist Training Institute, Center for Advanced Technologies, Information Technologies Center and Fast Track, Focus Hope provides career preparation.

Corporate & On-the-job Training

Henry Ford Community College Corporate Training Division
Training is offered in credit or non-credit forms, or through seminars granting continuing educational units (CEU’s). Work and learning skills assessment and the development of multi-agency learner support systems are some of the comprehensive services available through Corporate Training. Classes are taught at either College or company facilities. The use of work specific tools and equipment is encouraged in training and education projects. Corporate Training also co-manages an advanced CAD/CAM/CAE training facility.

Henry Ford Community College Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Division
Established in cooperation with industry, these programs provide theoretical and practical knowledge and the competencies required to supplement on-the-job training. Programs may vary from a single course that quickly provides specific knowledge and skills to a complete curriculum that provides comprehensive related instruction.

Wayne County Community College Contract Training
Contract Training provides customized training services for business, industry, government agencies and professional organizations. Among its many services and programs are:

  • Formative and summative evaluation

Henry Ford Community College Cooperative Education Program (http://www.hfcc.edu/coop/default.asp) The Henry Ford Community College Cooperative Education Program provides the opportunity for employers to hire qualified students with cutting edge knowledge. Students have the opportunity to practice their skills in a real work environment.

Michigan Talent Bank
Employers gain access to over 900,000 resumes posted on the Michigan Talent Bank that range from Administrative to Technical and Professional. Employers may post job openings in conjunction with the Talent Scout feature. The Talent Scout will send resumes daily or weekly that match the job title you are trying to fill.

M-Tec at Henry Ford Community College
The Michigan Technical Education Center, sponsored by the state of Michigan, helps businesses work smarter to improve workers’ skills in the new knowledge -based economy. M-TEC provides relevant information on the latest trends and resources available within Michigan’s workforce development and labor market information systems to human resource and training/development personnel.
